CPD: The desire to develop professional knowledge and skills
Continuous Professional Development (CPD) is a continuous process of personal growth; the planned acquisition of knowledge, experience and skills, and the development of personal qualities that enable you to execute your professional duties throughout your working life.
It stems from an individual's desire to develop professional knowledge and skills over time that will assist you with your career development or a possible career change and demonstrate your professional standing to clients and employers. It covers both technical and non-technical subject areas and can include topics not normally acquired during initial training or routine work, and which together develop and maintain competence to practise.
Why do I need CPD?
Dedicated hardworking professionals need to keep abreast of new working methods, new technologies, legislative changes and knowledge. Many employers are committed to promoting CPD and see it as a duty to encourage their staff to pursue CPD throughout their careers.
For some it may be a condition placed on their continued membership of a professional body. Others may be left to organise their own learning programme, to maintain their record year by year, and to update and extend their knowledge.
A record of your CPD should be started as soon as you commence employment.
CPD motivates you to:
- keep up-to-date with the latest advances in your profession
- develop greater knowledge in your specialist subject
- gain broader knowledge of you industry sector
- improve your general knowledge and skills for life
Activities that qualify for CPD can include:
- Obtaining formal qualifications
- Short courses (technical and non-technical)
- Attending conferences, seminars and workshops in your area of expertise
- On-the-job training
- Online tutorials /distance learning
- Being active in the local community
- Committee work in a professional body
